After more than a decade in senior in-house legal roles, most recently as General Counsel of a global industrial group with revenues exceeding EUR 2 billion, I know what businesses expect from their lawyers: clear advice, sound judgment and someone who takes responsibility.

Over the years, I have instructed and managed external counsel extensively. This has given me a clear understanding of what clients should expect from their lawyers – and what they should not have to pay for. I have also learned that the vast majority of legal matters, including complex ones, can be handled by an experienced lawyer who understands how businesses actually work, without the need for large teams or elaborate structures.

My in-house career has given me first-hand experience of working with management, shareholders and lenders, often in situations involving competing interests and difficult decisions. My work has spanned corporate and governance matters, M&A, corporate reorganisations, restructuring, financing and commercial contracts. It has included major changes in ownership, complex shareholder relationships and transactions such as a EUR 1.1 billion distressed-to-control transaction and a EUR 919 million recapitalisation.

Having been responsible for legal matters from within a business, I know that giving advice is only part of the job. What matters is what happens next – and I stay involved until it is done.
